Sensemaking
NSTA and Tuva share a common goal: making science learning engaging, accessible, and relevant to ALL students. This goal is realized when students, as scientists, have authentic opportunities to actively make sense of the world. Our co-branded professional development is built around the four critical attributes of sensemaking: phenomena, science and engineering practices, student ideas, and science ideas. We help educators centralize these practices to transform their instruction.
Authentic Data
Data is an integral part of scientific discovery; it should also play an integral role in the science classroom. Research shows students are more motivated when they investigate data connected to their own lives (Achieve, 2016). Building on this research, this collaboration combines NSTA's decades of leadership in science education with Tuva's expertise in data literacy and visualization. Together, we make complex, real-world data accessible for students and offer unique, classroom-ready value to educators.
Teacher Capacity
Together, NSTA and Tuva provide a cohesive system of professional learning designed to build teacher capacity in three key areas: cultivating students' data skills, bridging science and engineering practices with the statistical reasoning emphasized in math instruction, and leveraging authentic data to foster deeper sensemaking and student engagement.
